Artist Statement

My interest as a visual artist has concentrated on media technologies (qualifications on editing, filming, photography) combined with environmental installations. Graduating from my BA/Fine Art Degree, University of Leeds (2006), my future intentions are to develop the practical and theoretical skills, which will enable me to embark on a long-term career in fine art. Studying an MA course (2006/07), will be a vital component in facilitating my progress as both an artist and an academic.

Since January 2004, I, have achieved to exhibit/collaborate with: Henry Moore Institute, Leeds City Art Library - Leeds Art Festival, BBC Leeds. In addition, I worked with professional actors and produced a series of films, which I written, directed and filmed.

Graduating this year, I achieved to deliver a unique and exceptional body of contemporary art practice with my project Dialogue Series & the Displacement of the Grandma in the Degree Show (2006). I exhibited a series of documentary videos with discussions among the members of my family in Greece, on matters of cultural and political significance. Concerned with the problematic of the familiar and its progression into unfamiliar situations, I extended these situations to their extreme in the exhibition space, through the presence of my Greek grandmother. The Grandma as subject, was inhabiting the exhibition for a week cooking and knitting in the space. Highlighting the complexities of private and public communication, the visitors were welcomed to eat and interact with her, subverting the experience of familiar notions of language and culture.

This projects were publicised by media in UK and internationally. The work has been shown (June) in BBC 24 News , BBC Look North. I have been interviewed by BBC World Service, BBC 5 Live, BBC Leeds Radio. Articles and reviews have also being published in Evening Post, the Times, Daily Mirror, Sunday Times and Greek newspapers.
